Research into a Similar Film - First 15 minutes
Case 39

·      Low music, quite sinister whilst the institution is shown (first thing you see)
·      Goes to a quiet whisper of wind as you see 2 people walking up the stairs, creates an eerie atmosphere

·      Nearly silence as the man opens the door and you can hear the
creek of the door, the silence creates tension and suspense
·      Music gets louder as the girl begins to wake up and says ‘I can see you’. The innocence of the girls voice compared to the sinister music creates contrast

·      As the character of ‘Emily Jenkins’ is talking, there is a quiet
sound of chimes in the background, suggesting something strange is going to happen
·      The film cuts from the darkness of the child’s bedroom, to the brightness of the office, juxtaposition

·      Cuts from the busy, messy office to the sleek outline of the tall office blocks whilst showing opening credits
·      Music is quite relaxed, but then gets louder with a constant beat as opening credits play, then gets softer again and fades out
·      The scene in the bar creates a relaxed atmosphere and seems casual

·      As the car pulls up outside the house where the girl lives,
you can see the reflection of the house appear on the screen of the car. This raises codes of enigma and creates a suspicious atmosphere

·      The high angle shot makes ‘Emily Jenkins’ look small in comparison to the house, then cutting to a low angle shot, making the house look huge and over powering, creating a sense of fear

·      The shot of the girl stood at the top of the stairs is a low
angle shot, making the girl seem dangerous despite her small, fragile frame

·      The low music plays again as there is a two shot of the
mother and the little girl, making it seem as if they are
threatening

·      The sound as the music pans from the parents look
suspicious to the daughter looking frightened is again very
low, sounding like thunder and that there is something the
audience doesn’t know
